The State University has also embarked upon a significant
initiative in the area of technology that will place it at
the forefront of higher education institutions across the nation. SUNYConnect is
a path-breaking project which will electronically tie together all of the University's
library resources, creating a single University-wide 'virtual library' that can be
accessed anytime, anywhere at the touch of a computer keypad.
Governor George E. Pataki (Page 81; New York State Budget
document in pdf format) As a result of the renewed emphasis on research,
engineering and technology including SMART-NY, SUNYConnect and the SUNY Learning
Network ...we expect enormous dividends for New York State in the way of higher economic
growth and vitality. The effectiveness of the University and its 64 campuses as an
economic engine has already been proven across the state, but the University's potential
has barely been tapped.
SUNY System Administration's Renaissance
of the State University - A Vision for the Future
In addition to enhancing
and improving traditional library services, SUNYConnect allows us to harness the
collective resources of all libraries across SUNY and provide cost-efficient delivery and
access to new, powerful information tools through SUNY-wide licensing agreements to
quality electronic/Internet information resources.
SUNYLA letter of welcome to Chancellor King
I agree with Governor Pataki
that we need to pursue a high-tech 'virtual library' at the State University. ...Working
together, I know we can make it happen.
