On June 9, OLIS announced the release of a Web-based Information Literacy course to the SUNY community. The course was developed over six months by a team at Ulster County Community College under a memorandum of understanding with OLIS.

The announcemenSUNY Information Literacy Initiativet marked the culmination of a process that began with the appointment of a SUNY Council of Library Directors Information Literacy Task Force in 1996, which issued its final report on September 30, 1997. A follow-up task force on creation of a Web-based information literacy course issued its final report on April 24, 1998.

In order to fulfill the work and recommendations of these two committees, OLIS decided to incorporate development of a basic Web-based information literacy course into the newly created SUNYConnect project. To expedite this process and to capitalize on the expertise of the SUNY library community, it was determined to develop a request for proposals inviting only SUNY campuses to submit proposals for development of an information literacy course. In response to a request to the SUNYLA Library Instruction Committee, Sue Ann Butwell (Geneseo), Nancy Cannon (Oneonta) and Janet Hogan (Binghamton) participated in development of the RFP, which was issued in April 1999.

A committee including Carla List (Plattsburgh), Alexandra Pickett (SLN), Karen Swan (Albany), John Schumacher (OLIS) and Larry Randall (OLIS) evaluated the proposals submitted. The successful proposal was submitted by Ulster County Community College. A memorandum of understanding between OLIS and Ulster was signed in October 1999, and the completed course was delivered for review at the end of April.

The course is intended to be locally mounted by any SUNY campus choosing to adopt it. It may be modified for use by that campus' information literacy teaching programs. A campus that wishes to review the course for possible adoption will need to download it from the SUNYConnect web site. Because the download site is password protected, a potential user will need to request the URL, user name and password to gain access. Requests should be submitted by e-mail to olis@slscva.sysadm.suny.edu

As of July 6, more than three dozen requests to download the course had been received. OLIS is gratified at the enthusiastic response to the course and extends thanks to all who participated in the process. This is apparently the first time that an "in-house" SUNY RFP has been used for development of a product intended for University-wide adoption. It is hoped that its success will set a precedent for future such efforts.
