Kudos to the SUNYLA 2001 conference organizers. Corning Community College hosted an excellent conference this June. Special activities in special settings abounded: wine tasting, planetarium shows, after hours museum access, live music and lots of giveaways.

The conference planners had so many giveaways that two sessions of prize drawings were held. Bottles of wine, gift certificates, books, chocolate, etc, etc. just kept coming. One OLIS staffer received a large hint that he should do more cooking: an apron as well as a Corningware casserole as prizes.

This year's conference had a large number of Chu Scholarship winners. It's good to see the new members of the SUNY library community at the conference. Remember next year, prior to conference time, the scholarship monies for first time attendees.





Here are just a few of the highlights from this year's conference:

Keynote Speaker
The Keynote Address was offered up by Elaine Didier, Dean of Kresge Library at Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan. Dr. Didier's speech was entitled "The Leadership Challenge: Changing the Way We Do Business".

The ALEPH Track
Librarians from Binghamton, Fredonia, Oswego and SUNY OLIS presented well received programs on implementing the SUNYConnect LMS (ALEPH500). Future implementers of ALEPH learned useful basics of what the project involves, were able to hear the experiences and reactions of their colleagues that have come before them, and acquired some satisfaction with the sentiment "hey, if they can do it, so can we". Minimally, everyone learned that "STP" (switch to production) is more than just a motor oil additive.

Sandy Card and Abigail Bordeaux (Binghamton) emphasized some of these very points in their first presentation slide:

People, in and out of SUNY, determine the success of a SUNYConnect LMS implementation. "We've thoroughly enjoyed the people from Ex Libris", Sandy reported.

Fredonia was the first SUNYConnect library to STP. While their experience has not been totally positive, and there are still kinks to work out, Fredonia is upbeat. "It's a wonderful system", Vince Courtney told program attendees.

SUNY OLIS wants to extend thanks to everyone whose hard work went into providing the "ALEPH Track" at the 2001 conference. The spirit of sharing, SUNYConnect-style, is flourishing.

Ginette Chambers, Director of Faculty Awards and Development, SUNY System Administration.
Ms. Chambers was instrumental in shepherding the new Distinguished Librarian rank, seeing this to fruition through three different SUNY chancellors.
