Cover Story 2004: Year of the University Press Features Library Materials from "Anywhere" |
The State University of
New York Press is one of the largest public university presses in the United States.
Part of the Provost's Office, SUNY Press and its titles are annual award winners.
Representatives from SUNY Press participated earlier this year in a program dealing with institutional repositories and software related to the use and management of these digital archives. Institutional repositories are seen as one source of the answer to the "economic and technological turbulence" related to the scholarly communication process. One of the stated goals for the "The Year of the University Press" is to "encourage innovative projects in scholarly communication among libraries and presses." In that spirit, SUNY Press and SUNYConnect reached agreement in June 2004 to make SUNY Press' content more accessible to SUNYConnect participants. While some access and security issues need to be resolved, efforts are underway to load the full-text of 350 SUNY Press titles into an electronic format. "As a key market for university press works, research libraries are delighted to help promote the value of presses to the academic community. Understanding the unique contributions presses make to scholarly communications is critical to ensuring effective partnerships in creating future systems." ARL Executive Director, Duane Webster. |
