research and more... one tangible benefit from the work of SUNYLA is a great annual conference. This
year's conference at SUNY Brockport was no exception. Our thanks to all of the organizers
and presenters for putting on an excellent conference. What follows are some of one
reporter's observations... ) "We are extremely fortunate that this important office [of Library and Information Services] relies and depends on the input, expertise, representation and validation of our members. Much of the success we all enjoy comes directly from the strong and valued mutual respect and collaboration we share with that office," Mark A. Smith, SUNY Ceramics (prepared remarks from the now former SUNYLA President). OLIS activities at the annual conference included a pre-conference presentation on the LMS implementation and a status report provided via the poster sessions. See the SUNYConnect web site for these presentation materials. I act as the liaison between OLIS and the SUNYLA Executive Board/Council. Our report included (among other things) mention that the office has been given a go-ahead to add staff members. The good news is that many SUNY libraries are in the same position of seeking new staff members. The report also reminded everyone of the SUNY-wide license for the EZproxy software: "Implementing EZproxy is almost painless. And it is providing 24x7 access to your library from around the world," Bill Drew, SUNY Morrisville. Conference organizers had to scramble when it became clear that canceled flights were going to prevent the keynote speaker's arrival in Brockport. Conference planners brought together a group to discuss challenges and opportunities facing librarianship as we move into a new millennium. The gracious volunteers for the interesting and informative panel discussion that ensued included Dr. Timothy Flanagan, Vice President for Academic Affairs at SUNY Brockport, "I like to call the library the heart of the college. And as we all know Americans are tough on their hearts." One of the highlights of the Business Meeting was Maureen Zajkowski's Friend of SUNYLA award. "Maureen is indeed a friend of SUNYLA. The challenges involved in [selecting a new LMS vendor] can't be overestimated. Her work is bringing SUNY libraries closer together." Carol Anne Germain, University at Albany, Chair-SUNYLA Professional Development Committee. "I want challenges and I want to have fun. With this job I've had both and the opportunity to work with a lot of great people. When it comes to SUNYConnect activities, you folks know it doesn't get done without your active participation," Maureen Zajkowski, OLIS. The New York State Library Assistants' Association (NYSLAA) also received a Friend of SUNYLA Award. The conference included an array of good sessions. The program also included some (shall we say) non-traditional sorts of presentations. I attended a number of these. For example: Who Wants to Be a Librarianaire? As well as Self-Renewal through Movement - I really enjoyed this session. I think it would be a great addition to every library conference. Everyone I spoke with also had very positive comments about this program. Brockport is lucky to have the likes of Sondra Fraleigh as a member of their dance faculty.
